Iowa mental health counselors have a license renewal every two years with a September 30th deadline, even years. In renewing a license, forty (40) board-approved continuing education hours are required. Of the 40 hours, twenty (20) hours of continuing education is allowed for home study if approved by The National Board of Certified Counselors.
The main goal of continuing education is to assure the highest standards for the profession of mental health counselor. All licensed Iowa mental health counselors are required to engage in ongoing educational activities that can contribute to competence and knowledge gained from previous educational experiences.
Professional Development Resources is approved by The National Board of Certified Counselors to sponsor continuing education for mental health counselors. Professional Development Resources assumes all responsibility for content and programs. Iowa mental health counselors can earn up to 20 continuing education hours through online course work at http://www.pdresources.org/.
