Our company, which started as one person presenting a single live seminar to small groups in selected Florida cities, is now an established entity in the world of continuing education featuring over 170 CE courses that are available online 24/7 anywhere in the world.

We have earned formal recognition as a provider of continuing education by major professional boards, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), and the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). In addition, we are recognized by professional boards in Florida, California, Ohio, Illinois, South Carolina, and Texas.

“It is really hard to believe we have been doing this for 20 years,” says Leo Christie, PhD, licensed marriage and family therapist and president of Professional Development Resources. “It is gratifying to look around us today and see where we are now, as compared with the early years. We are squarely in the digital world, with all of our continuing education courses available via the Internet and nearly all of our procedures completely paperless. As opposed to offering live seminars to small select audiences as we did when we started, we can now make our CE curriculum available to professionals anywhere in the world.”

It has not always been easy according to Christie. There were hard times, as one would expect in any business that has persisted for 20 years. “There were times I was not at all sure we were going to make it. When we transitioned from presenting live seminars to offering home study courses, it was a major transformation that required re-purposing our entire curriculum. Presenting material in written format is fundamentally different from doing so in live settings. Suddenly we had an urgent need for more topics and more courses. We had gotten along well with five or six topics in live seminars, but that was far too few to offer for self-study. Our most pressing and challenging task was curriculum development.”

Today, we have over 170 online continuing education courses covering a very wide variety of clinical topics such as domestic violence, professional ethics and boundaries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism, Alzheimer’s, alternative therapies, mindfulness, multicultural issues, substance abuse and addiction, gender identity, preventing medical errors, ADHD, psychopharmacology, brain injury, eliminating self-defeating behaviors, overeating and obesity, treating chronic pain, and anxiety management. There are even a few unexpected and non-traditional courses, like Animal Assisted Therapy and Electronic Media and Youth Violence (Cyber-Bullying).

As a 20th birthday present to ourselves and all of our loyal customers, we are poised to launch a  new and revolutionary website platform, which will feature a wide array of user engagement tools we hope will propel us into the next 20 years.

Mapping Your End-of-Life Choices

Mapping Your End-of-Life ChoicesRobert H. Laws, a retired judge in San Francisco, and his wife, Beatrice, knew it was important to have health care directives in place to help their doctors and their two sons make wise medical decisions should they ever be unable to speak for themselves. With forms from their lawyer, they completed living wills and assigned each other as health care agents.

They dutifully checked off various boxes about not wanting artificial ventilation, tube feeding and the like. But what they did not know was how limiting and confusing those directions could be.

For example, Judge Laws said in an interview, he’d want to be ventilated temporarily if he had pneumonia and the procedure kept him alive until antibiotics kicked in and he could breathe well enough on his own.

What he would not want is to be on a ventilator indefinitely, or to have his heart restarted if he had a terminal illness or would end up mentally impaired.

Nuances like these, unfortunately, escape the attention of a vast majority of people who have completed advance directives, and may also discourage others from creating directives in the first place.

Enter two doctors and a nurse who are acutely aware of the limitations of most such directives. In 2008, they created a service to help people through the process, no matter what their end-of-life choices may be.

The San Francisco-based service, called Good Medicine Consult & Advocacy, is the brainchild of Dr. Jennifer Brokaw, 46, who was an emergency room physician for 14 years and saw firsthand that the needs and wishes of most patients were not being met by the doctors who cared for them in crisis situations.

“The communication gap was huge,” she said in an interview. “The emergency room doctor has to advocate for patients. I felt I could do that and head things off at the pass by communicating both with patients and physicians.”

Sara C. Stephens, a nurse, and Dr. Lael Conway Duncan, an internist, joined her in the project. Ms. Stephens flew to La Crosse, Wis., to be trained in health care advocacy at Gundersen Lutheran Health System. Through its trainees, tens of thousands of nurses, social workers and chaplains have been taught how to help patients plan for future care decisions.

“People often need help in thinking about these issues and creating a good plan, but most doctors don’t have the time to provide this service,” said Bernard Hammes, who runs the training program at Gundersen Lutheran. “Conversation is very important for an advance care plan to be successful. But it isn’t just a conversation; it’s at least three conversations.”’

A History of PDR

Professional Development Resources was incorporated on August 12, 1992 in the State of Florida as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Its mission was – and continues to be – to seek out the most recent scientific and clinical publications in selected professional areas of psychology, mental health, social work, nutrition, speech language pathology, and occupational therapy and to present continuing education topics of current clinical relevance to the named professions for the purpose of improving patient care.

The company’s founder, Leo Christie, PhD, is a Florida-licensed marriage and family therapist who was in private practice in Jacksonville, Florida from 1982 to 1992. With the intention of establishing an outlet for his interest in writing and teaching, Christie founded the new company and set out to explore the possibility of planning and delivering live educational seminars. The vice president and director of continuing education was – and still is – his wife, Dr. Catherine Christie, who is a registered dietitian.

Christie recalls the early years: “The first steps were to become credentialed by the professional boards, select and develop a topic, identify target audiences, implement a marketing plan, and arrange funding for a series of delivery sites in the State of Florida – a daunting process, to say the least. We set out to secure accreditations from some of the Florida licensing boards so that we could award official CE credit to those who attended our conferences. That process took over 8 months. I remember having some difficulty with the Florida Board of Psychology, and it required a personal appeal and some restructuring before we were eventually recognized as a CE provider. We also sought and received approval to offer CE to nurses, under the auspices of the New York Nurses Association, which was a widely accepted accrediting board at the time. In the early years, nurses represented more than 50% of our seminar attendees.

“During the summer and fall of 1993, we completed 12 six-hour seminars in 7 Florida cities. The summer seminars were titled ‘Fears, Phobia, and Panic’ and dealt with the full spectrum of anxiety disorders. In fall, we introduced a new topic ‘Compulsive Behaviors,’ which featured a study of obsessive compulsive disorder. As a startup year, 1993 generated enough revenue to make further planning and development possible for the new company.

From there, the company went on to secure provider accreditation credentials from a number of national and state boards, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), and the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) [now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics]. The speaker circuit grew to the point at which there were four speakers on the road at one time presenting various topics in 46 of the 50 states.

Renewal Information for North Dakota Social Workers

Social Workers in North Dakota are required to renew their licenses biennially on December 31st of odd years. 30 hour of continuing education are required to renew (CE due 11/15 of odd years).

North Dakota Social Workers can earn all 30 hours online - on their time!

Non-acceptable continuing education topics include, but are not limited to, those contrary to the code of ethics, as well as topics such as marketing, business, personal enrichment, time management, supervisory sessions, technology enhancement, staff orientation, agency or other meetings regarding procedural issues, CPR classes, computer-related workshops, etc.

Renewal Information for Maryland Social Workers

Maryland Social Workers can earn up to 20 hours through ASWB-approved online courses

Maryland Social Workers are required to renew their licenses every 2 years, on October 31st. 40 hours of continuing education are required to renew. 20 hours must be earned in Category 1 (live courses), including 3 hours in professional ethics. The remaining 20 hours may be earned through online courses offered by ASWB-approved providers (Category 2).

Continuing Education Requirements for Maryland-Licensed Social Workers

The current continuing education requirement is 40 credit hours (30 for LSWA’s) of continuing education in programs and categories approved by the Board for each two-year period of licensure.

Category I credit can only be given by Board Authorized Sponsors. An organization can be a Board Authorized Sponsor by meeting the requirements for automatically authorized sponsorship. If an organization does not fall into the automatically authorized group, then they must complete an approval process through the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners. In addition, the Board recognizes and accepts the continuing education approval process conducted by the Association of Social Work Boards , the National Association of Social Workers and the Clinical Social Work Federation.

Home Study Programs

A licensee can earn up to 20 (15 for LSWA’s) Category II continuing education credit hours from home study programs. The home study program must be provided by a Board approved Category I sponsor or by an automatically eligible sponsor.

Ethics Requirement

Effective November 1, 2003 all licensed social workers are required to obtain three (3) Category I continuing education credit hours, every two years, in the content area focusing on ethics and professional conduct, including boundary issues. The program must be given by a Board Approved Sponsor.

The content area must be related to social work ethics and professional conduct which may include maintaining appropriate boundaries with clients and a review of the social work statute and Code of Ethics as it relates to conduct which is consistent with generally accepted professional standards. In addition, the content of the program may address issues related to avoiding dual relationships and the acceptance of gifts.

Since many mental health professionals require their licensees to take similar ethics programs, you may be receiving notices of programs offered by their national professional associations who are approved by the Board to provide Category I continuing education credit hours. It would be appropriate to participate in their programs.

Category I Activities

Live real-time transactions between teachers and learners (may include face to face and interactive technology).

Courses, seminars, workshops, symposiums, conferences, staff development, case conferences, grand rounds and attendance or presentation of programs offered at professional or scientific meetings

  • At least 20 (15 for LSWA’s) of the required credit hours must be earned in this category.
  • All 40 (30 for LSWA’s) credit hours may be earned in this category.
  • At least 3 credit hours must be earned in ethics and professional conduct, including boundary issues.

Documentation

An official transcript for academic courses; or a certificate of participation, which is signed and dated by the approved sponsor indicating credit hours earned.

Category II Activities

Programs which are less structured or are not Board-authorized. Workshops, conferences, in-service trainings, structured peer-case conferences, journal clubs, preparation and presentation of a scientific or professional paper at a meeting of a professional or scientific organization; authoring, editing or reviewing a professional publication; preparing and presenting Category I activities. Audio-visual instructional programs and home-study courses provided by a Board approved Category I sponsor.

  • Twenty (20) (15 for LSWA’s) of the required 40 credit hours may be earned in this category.

Documentation

A certificate of participation, if available; or if a certificate of participation is not available: the dates when the program was presented; the name(s) of the presenter(s); topics presented; and an outline of the presentation (this could be from your notes). Post-test passing score for audio-visual and home study programs or a certificate of participation if available. Proof of presentation made, reprints of publications, letters from educational institutions when credit is claimed for the instruction of students; dates, times and names of participants in structured peer-case conferences and journal club activities.

Other Items

No credit can be earned for activities related to consultation or the provision of and participation in planned supervisory activities as a supervisor or supervisee.

Social workers shall retain records documenting completion of continuing education requirements for 1 year after the licensing renewal date. The Board conducts a random audit of licenses renewed each year.

Attention !!!

Personal growth courses (e.g. yoga, qi gong, meditation) intended for lay audiences will not be approved for social workers for CEUs. For approval, the audience must be all professionals, the topic theory-based and supported by research, and the technique’s application to social work clients must be shown.
