License Renewal and Continuing Education for Indiana Psychologists

08 Aug

Indiana-licensed psychologists have a biennial license renewal deadline of August 31st, even years.

The board recognizes The American Psychological Association as a provider of continuing education courses for Indiana psychologists.

The objective of continuing education is to ensure the highest standards for the practice of psychology by requiring licensees to participate in advancing educational activities. With these experiences, licensees can increase their aptitude and knowledge obtained during prior education and training.

Professional Development Resources is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Professional Development Resources maintains responsibility for all programs and content. Indiana psychologists can earn all 40 hours of their required hours through online coursework. Continuing Education Requirements

As a condition of license renewal, all licensees are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education activities per renewal period (every two years). Of the 40 hour minimum, 6 hours of continuing education must be in ethics, a minimum of three (3) hours of which must be Category I courses. An example of an ethics course that meets this requirement is Ethical Decision Making For Psychologists: A Practical Model.

A minimum of twenty (20) credit hours must be earned in category I courses.

Category I continuing education courses include the following: formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, post doctoral institutes, and home study programs including approved computer, audio, and video instructional programs, designed by board approved organizations, not to exceed ten credit hours per license period. Please note that home study programs are subject to board verification and approval procedures.

No more than twenty (20) credit hours will be granted for category II activities. Category II continuing education activities include the following:

• Journal clubs, colloquia, invited speaker sessions, in-house seminars, and case conferences that are particularly designed for teaching or training.

• Professional or scientific meetings that are programs relevant to psychology.

• Individualized learning, including approved audio and video instructional programs and formal professional supervision. Individualized learning does not include administrative supervision.

Evaluation and Verification of Continuing Education Hours and Programs

Sponsors of category I courses will provide you with verification of your attendance of a course. You will need to retain verification of attendance or completion of both category I and category II continuing education activities for a period of five (5) years.

An official transcript will be accepted as proof of completion of a college course. You will want to retain verification of attendance, and only send verification to the board upon the request.

It is important to keep your own record of your Category II courses and activities. You do not need to obtain a certificate of completion for Category II courses.

You will want to have the required number of hours of continuing education to renew your license.
